How Flexstone is built, coated and printed

Flexstone Eco-Material is a film of resin compounded with 60–80% calcium carbonate, finished with a coating engineered for a specific print process. Three choices define every grade: the density series, the coating and the backing.

How it is made

From limestone powder to print-ready roll

  1. 01Limestone + resin

60–80% calcium carbonate powder with 20–40% resin.

  2. 02Knead

Thoroughly kneaded into one compound — the mineral is the main material.

  3. 03Form

Formed into film, density 1.0–1.4, 0.08–0.4 mm. No process water.

  4. 04Coat

A print-receptive coating matched to the print process.

  5. 05Convert

Adhesive or fabric lamination, slit to rolls or die-cut to sheets.

Density series

FS, FM and FG — the hand feel is set by density

At the same thickness, a higher density means more mass per square metre and more stiffness. Opacity values are published on the specification sheets only; brochure-only grades carry a nominal weight.

SeriesDensity (g/cm³)CharacterNominal weight at 0.20 mm (g/m²)
FS1.0Soft, lightweight, paper-like textured surface200
FM1.2Balanced flexibility, fine surface240
FG1.4Rigid, fine surface280
Same 0.20 mm thickness, three densities: nominal weight

Nominal weight (g/m²) ≈ thickness (mm) × density (g/cm³) × 1000

FM1.2 g/cm³ · Balanced

FG1.4 g/cm³ · Rigid
280

Nominal values. Specification sheet NMEQS-MACO 293 states the weight with a tolerance: 200±10 g/m² for FS-2K20 and 280±10 g/m² for FG-2K20; FM-2K20 is brochure-only, with a nominal weight of 240 g/m².

Further suffixPresent on some part numbers — quote it in full
FS

Density series

FS = 1.0, FM = 1.2, FG = 1.4 g/cm³.

S

Coating

S = solvent / latex / wide-format UV inkjet (FS-S22-PSA and FS-S27-PSA: HP Latex only). K = wide-format UV inkjet on the wide-format grades; on narrow-web label stock: offset, flexo and UV on a label press. 2K = offset and UV, two sides (FS / FG 0.15–0.30 mm also flexo and screen; 0.20–0.30 mm also rolls for wide-format UV inkjet). I / 2I = HP Indigo (FG grades also toner). A leading 2 means coated on both sides.

22

Face thickness

In hundredths of a millimetre: 22 = 0.22 mm.

PSA

Backing

PSA = permanent adhesive. WRA = water-based removable. DPA = dot-pattern air-release. RSA = removable label adhesive named in the brochure only (no published part number or test data). FAB5 = wall fabric backing, 0.5 mm class. No suffix = no adhesive.

This reading is derived from the tables of the specification sheets. Some part numbers carry a further suffix such as -80G; quote the full part number when ordering.

Print compatibility

Match the coating to the ink

The base film is the same; the coating decides which print process a grade runs on.

Rows follow the print processes listed for each part number. The two UV columns are different processes: wide-format UV inkjet, and UV-curable inks on a press. On the 2K grades of NMEQS-MACO 293 the UV entry is UV curable; wide-format UV inkjet is listed only for the FS / FG 2K rolls from 0.20 to 0.30 mm (NMEQS-MACO 296). The label stock sheet (NMEQS-MACO 295) and the brochure print plain “UV”, shown as such. Sources: the first 2K row reproduces the printing index of specification sheet NMEQS-MACO 293, the FG 2I / I row follows NMEQS-MACO 298, and the FM / 0.35 mm 2K row and the FS / FM 2I row follow the Label & Hang Tag Solutions brochure. FS-S22-PSA and FS-S27-PSA appear only on the HP Latex sheet (NMEQS-MACO 297). For wallcovering production the material is also suited to gravure printing, embossing and graining.

Physical data at a glance

Values are published per group of part numbers on the specification sheets. Grades listed only in the Label & Hang Tag Solutions brochure (FM 2K, all 0.35 mm 2K, FS / FM 2I) carry a nominal weight only.

Adhesives

Four adhesive options

PSA — permanent adhesive

PSA is a middle-tack permanent adhesive. With medium initial adhesion and a non-carrier design, it adheres easily to mostly smooth surfaces and sticks firmly once fixed.

25 mm × 25 mm area hangs 0.5 kg for 24 hours without slide
Initial adhesion
Rolling ball, GB/T 4852-2002: 8–10# steel ball, ≤100 mm

WRA — water-based removable adhesive

WRA is a water-based and eco-friendly removable adhesive. With medium tack, it is suitable to adhere on semi-rough and smooth surfaces.

DPA — dot-pattern air-release adhesive

DPA is a high-tack acrylic removable adhesive with a dot pattern. It provides moderate initial tack for easy repositioning during installation, while the air-release channels enable bubble-free application. With excellent holding power and outstanding weatherability, it resists lifting and deformation over time.

RSA — removable label adhesive

A designation used in the Label & Hang Tag Solutions brochure for removable adhesive labels, described there as allowing repeated peeling and repositioning without residue or damage to the substrate. No test data and no part number with a specification sheet is published for it.

Process & storage

Conditions stated on the specification sheets

They apply to the part numbers the sheets list. The offset sheet (NMEQS-MACO 293) gives the same conditions, including that unfinished material be seal-packed, but without the line that it be used within one month; brochure-only part numbers have no published conditions.

  • Working condition: 15℃/59℉ to 30℃/86℉ at 30% to 60% relative humidity.
  • Application condition: -20℃/-4℉ to 60℃/140℉ at 20% to 80% relative humidity. Temperature variation within 30 minutes should stay below 15℃.
  • Store in the original box, out of direct sunlight, at 10℃/50℉ to 35℃/95℉ and 20% to 70% relative humidity.
  • Shelf life: 12 months under the storage condition. Unfinished material should be seal-packed and used up within 1 month.
