Pulpex says the Scottish facility will have an initial capacity of up to 40 million units per year and calls the plant “the first step on a roadmap to 1 billion units” per year.
United Kingdom-based Pulpex Ltd. has announced the opening of a manufacturing facility near Glasgow, Scotland, to produce molded pulp bottles it says can be collected and recycled along with other types of paper and board.
Pulpex says the Scottish facility will have an initial capacity of up to 40 million units per year and calls the plant “the first step on a roadmap to 1 billion units” per year.
The factory has been supported by investment from the U.K.’s National Wealth Fund and the Scottish National Investment Bank, says Pulpex.
The company says its patent-protected fiber bottle is made from sustainably sourced wood pulp and has been designed to be recycled “through normal household paper and card streams using existing paper and board recycling facilities.”
“The opening of our Glasgow facility marks the moment Pulpex moves from proving the technology to proving the industrial model,” says Sandy Westwater, CEO of Pulpex. “We have developed and industrialized a breakthrough packaging technology in the U.K, and Glasgow is where partners and brand owners can now see it running.”
Adds the CEO, “What we have from today is a conversation about a working plant rather than a prototype enabling the start of a material impact on our environment by reducing CO2 emissions and critically, removing plastic waste on land and in our oceans.”
Pulpex says household recycling compatibility is a decisive advantage for brand owners responding to tightening packaging and recyclability requirements, including those arising under the European Union Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and the U.K.’s extended producer responsibility (EPR) system.
In addition to referring to the bottles as compatible for recyclers and paper mill operators, Pulpex says they are engineered for compatibility with existing liquids filling infrastructure, “allowing adoption without costly production-line modifications.”
Pulpex says the Glasgow plant opens with commercial demand already in place, adding, “More than 90 percent of the site’s initial available capacity for the current financial year has been sold, with customers committed across both food-grade and non-food categories.”
The company identifies Purely Scottish Natural Mineral Water as among the first brands to use bottles produced at the site, along with a household cleaning brand called Smol.
Pulpex says it has Manufacture Under Licence partners in place in Switzerland and India, commenting that such partnerships “demonstrate the network taking shape across multiple regions as the practical engine of the 40 million to a billion unit roadmap.”
